Learning

The Miriam Webster dictionary describes learning as the process of acquiring new knowledge or skills.

We generally associate learning with school and education. However, learning begins from birth. We learn to eat, crawl, walk, recognize our parents and what not. As children develop, they learn an inordinate number of skills. Learning is a continuous process which begins from the cradle and continues till the day we leave this Earth.

A lot of learning happens unconsciously as we listen to people, gain new experiences, read, watch television, interact with friends or other people.

However, learning happens only if we have the will to learn. Learning is something only we can do for ourselves. We learn if it is interests us to do so. Once we have learnt something, we have evolved or changed in some way.

LBH (Learn by Heart) – any child will tell you what it stands for. How important is this? Is this akin to learning? Memorizing is much shallower than learning as we memorize without understanding.
Children are often told that if they don’t understand, it is all right. Learn by heart instead!

When I talk to school going children about learning or studying today, I often get the answer that it is boring.

To the question, “Why do you study/learn?” I often get the answer, “To gain good marks.”

To the question, “Does studying interest you?” Many say it does not while some say they have a liking for a few subjects.

They too ask me questions. “Why study history?” is a common question. Or even “ Why Shakespeare?” They wonder how they gain from these subjects.

Do you think children need to be motivated to learn? How should we do so?
